Lesson 13: Still, Sleep, and Go Lines (Direction, Action, and Rhythm)

lesson image

Instructors tell children:

  • Action is movement and is suggested by lines, hence is a branch of direction.
  • In a general way, the direction of a line indicates movement.
  • Vertical lines are "still" lines. They express stillness, but when in motion suggest vertical motion, as in falling rain, falling snow, or a waterfall.
  • Horizontal lines are "sleep" lines and suggest repose, but when in motion suggest horizontal action.
  • Oblique lines are "go" lines and express movement more than any other line, and for that reason are also called "action lines."

Instructors show the lesson image and ask children to point to:

  • The still lines.
  • The sleep lines.
  • The go lines.

Children complete the following drill work:

  1. Copy the reposing dog as shown, until the drawing is mastered.
  2. Copy the standing dog as shown, until the drawing is mastered.
  3. Copy the running dog as shown, until the drawing is mastered.

Children complete the following memory and imagination work

  1. Without looking at the lesson image, draw a dog and a cat reposing together.
  2. Without looking at the lesson image, draw a dog on a leash standing still next to his owner.
  3. Without looking at the lesson image, draw a dog running after a rabbit.
  4. Re-examine the lesson image to verify, correct, and perfect your images.
